Young people aren't as interested in yoga as they used to be (they're doing pilates & HIIT workouts instead).

BUT...

Aging people are more interested in it.

And there are plenty of them...
In the US, more than 10,000 people turn 65 every day. From 2002 to 2017 yoga participation in adults 65+ increased 5 fold.

In the US, more than 10,000 people turn 65 every day. From 2002 to 2017 yoga participation in adults 65+ increased 5 fold.
These folks are interested in natural, empowering ways to stay healthy as they age.
but mobility, stability & confidence varies greatly.
Which is why mixed chair & mat classes are a great offering for this demographic.

If you can masterfully teach combined chair & mat classes you are uniquely positioned to serve yoga's fastest growing group of students.
Why teach mixed chair & mat Yoga to Aging Folks?
  • Greater agency - they can choose what practice suits them best on a day to day basis.
  • More students - they may invite their partners, some of whom may need chair practices, so they can practice together.
  • Accessible for everyone - they may be worried that they'll fall over or won't be able to get up off the floor in a mat class, but the chair gives them a legitimate alternative.
  • No one left out - they may be nervous that they'll embarrass themselves or not be able to keep up with the other students, but the chair gives them a safety net.
  • Second chance yoga - when word spreads about how good your classes are folks who've had a prior bad experience of yoga may give it another chance.
Chair yoga is an important adaptation of yoga practice for folks who
(for many reasons) prefer to use a chair to practice.

Good mixed class teaching is not about catchy music or good choreography.

It’s about understanding and using principles and theory to create truly unique
and transformative experiences for your students.

THE SUBTLE® YOGA STORY

Kristine Kaoverii Weber
MA, c-IAYT, eRYT500, YACEP
I started teaching chair yoga in 1995, and immediately encountered rooms of people with very different mobilities.
I have spent decades teaching integrated practices that are personalized, authentic, nervous system focused, and don’t conflate yoga with exercise.
I am an ERYT500 and a C-IAYT Yoga Therapist. I’ve been training yoga teachers since 2003 and mental health professionals since 2009. I have worked in senior centers, independent living and assisted living facilities, college for seniors, drug and alcohol treatment centers, and mental health facilities for my entire yoga teaching career. Making yoga accessible is always my priority.
