How Yoga Can Play A Pivotal Role In The Personal And Cultural Transformation of Racism
Although racism has been around for a long time, the Black Lives Matter movement is only now receiving the push of a critical tipping point.

AND CHANGE IS HAPPENING.
Finally, the names of football teams, food products, mountain ranges, and bands are changing and some headway is beginning to be made in the demands of justice for  BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) folks who passed too soon.
Perhaps you’ve watched the recent events with a sense of hopelessness and helplessness, grappling with questions like:
  • Is it even possible to address such a deeply entrenched and widespread problem as racism?  And if it is possible, how?
  • Individually, can I really make a difference?
  • What about my own, unconscious racial biases as a white person, or BIPOC persons carrying intersectional identity? Can I actually change them?
  • As a BIPOC yoga practitioner or teacher, what is my role in responding to racism?
  • How do I deal with situations in which family, friends, or colleagues say or do racist things?

  • How do I deal with situations in which family, friends, or colleagues say or do racist things?
As a "yoga person", you may sense that the ethics of yoga, the yamas and niyamas, can play a role in the dismantling of racism. But you may not feel clear about how to connect your yoga with taking the right action.

You may feel that yoga has been appropriated by dominant white culture and stripped of its deeper potential.
  • Maybe you’ve already tried to make a connection between yoga ethics and combating racism?
  • Maybe you’ve read books about combating racism and found that they addressed ahimsa (non-harming), but didn’t necessarily help you understand and embody how the other 9 yamas and niyamas are integral to this problem?
  • Maybe you already understand yoga ethics, but not necessarily in the context of using them to address one of the most pressing social issues of our time?
This is not surprising when there’s:
Not enough facilitators of yoga beyond asana
We honor folks who have brought attention to the yamas and niyamas. Having gatekeepers who learned through lived experiences and decades of academic yoga studies can help you navigate these principles and teach you how to practically apply them to transform racism. It will help you quickly move from theory to practice, help you clarify your role and help you to embody the principles.
TOO LITTLE OR TOO MUCH INFORMATION
The yamas and niyamas are usually taught as a quick lecture in teacher trainings, but they are rarely taught as practices and so most yoga teachers and students don’t have a good working knowledge of them - and they are often relegated to the role of ornamental yoga studio wall art. You can learn about yamas and niyamas on the Internet, but the challenge is in understanding how they specifically apply to transforming racism.

We'd love to tell you about our new course:

The first time I connected race with yoga was...
... during my first yoga teacher training program. I’d already been practicing yoga for 10 years. It was a group of 13 women; 11 white, one Hispanic and me the one black woman. During that training I was asked:  “Why don't black people practice yoga?”

This question led me down a rich history trail which was later documented by Jana Long in a film called “The Uncommon Yogi: A History of Blacks and Yoga in the U.S”.

I did find the answer to my questions...the “why don’t we”, but I also found that “yes, we do practice yoga!”

My eyes were opened to how yoga was not as accessible to people of color. This led my heart to find and practice with black yoga teachers. That’s how I discovered Maya Breuer and her Yoga Retreat for Women of Color™.
In 2011, for Mother’s Day, my husband gifted the Yoga Retreat for Women of Color™ to me; my most memorable Mother’s Day gift to date! At that retreat I knew that I had found my teacher. I’ve attended the Yoga Retreat for Women of Color™ more than 10 times now and in 2018 I became the Co-Director.

I am also an active member of the Black Yoga Teachers Alliance and these two communities have allowed me to learn from and commune with people of color from around the globe.

I've seen, heard, felt and been the “Uncommon Yogi” in many spaces - which is simply a reflection of how BIPOC feel in our overall society in general.

I’ve also learned from a variety of BIPOC and non-BIPOC yoga teachers how the yamas and niyamas are the key ethical principles that form the foundation of our yoga practice and ultimately the lifestyle that we choose to live.
I know what it's like to be black, to be a black yoga teacher, and to be a yogi that practices the yamas and niyamas in all of her interactions with the thousands of people I have taught over the past 9 years.

Now, I want to share with you my insight on how to use “beyond the mat” yoga to take positive action towards healing the world.
As a middle-class white yoga teacher who...
... has worked in clinical settings, has taught in the mental health field, and has been a long-time advocate for yoga-based public and population health solutions, I have long been aware of the challenges that racist attitudes and systems have presented for BIPOC, and how they have created barriers to yoga.

While I can’t possibly understand what it’s like to walk through life as a BIPOC I know that dialog, open-mindedness, and a willingness to shift perspective and attitude is essential to becoming an ally. There is always more to learn and always scope to become a greater ally.

For decades, I have studied and woven into my teachings the social determinants of health, the biopsychosocial spiritual dimensions of health, and the economic and racially-based disparities that create barriers for BIPOC to access yoga.
My goal is to share what I believe are some of the most powerful tools available to human beings to fight and dismantle racism - the yamas and niyamas - in a way that’s accessible to everyone.
May we each share a little of our story with you?
Hi, I’m Kristine Kaoverii Weber
I’ve been studying yoga and the science behind it since 1989, teaching yoga since 1995 and training yoga teachers since 2003. I’m an advocate for slow, mindful practices as a solution to the healthcare crisis. In March 2019 I was invited to speak to staff and members of the U.S. Congress at Capitol Hill about the potential benefits of yoga therapy in the healthcare system.
I have personally shown thousands of yoga professionals how to confidently understand and teach the life-changing value of slow, mindful practices.
I have been studying yoga as a holistic, mind-body-spirit health strategy for the past 30 years and understand that mental health is affected by biopsychosocial spiritual factors and not just an individual endeavor.

and more!
This can help you break away from:
Restrictive Rules
The yamas and niyamas aren't some sort of boring rules that get imposed from outside, but rather they are desires that arise from within. Giving them the opportunity to arise is the key to unlocking their power in racial healing.
Individualism
The unlearning of racism and the study of yoga is a pursuit of a lifetime. Figure out how the two are connected and support the other. We can guide you through this hard work.
Waiting To Take Action
You need practical steps to imperfect action. The course is self-paced, and you won’t need to complete the entire course before taking action. You’ll get many journaling exercises, affirmations, quotes for reflection, yoga practices, and meditations to work through at your own pace.

what students say about Kiesha
“Thank you for asking these questions and making it part of your YTT. I am grateful for teachers like you and Tai that create welcoming classes and want to do more. As you know, accessibility and social justice are some of my passions. Below is a list of teachers and organizations that I have practiced with and recommend for their focus on accessibility, body positivity, and social justice. Kiesha Battles: I AM YOGA, affordable community classes taught by women of color and accessible for all bodies. (I recommend attending these classes.)”
Desiree Frasca

Yesterday I released a lot in my tears. In the partnering activity, my tears reached into the soul of the brown eyed black woman who stood in front of me, my tears latched on to the support of Kiesha when she assisted my tree pose (Spirit saying “I’ve got you!”) The community Jasmine, you, Kiesha and others have created, is indeed the soil I want to be rooted in. Thank you! 😘🤗

with the right tools, you can be a voice of change in the Fight against Racism
When a culture marginalizes a group of people, everyone suffers. We long to find our common humanity. When we are separated by systems of thought that promote racism, BIPOC suffer, and everyone is left grief-stricken and longing for connection.

This course is an opportunity to weave humanity together, to find common ground, and to use the perennial teachings to make the world a happier, more compassionate place. And, at the same time, it asks hard questions and avoids spiritual bypassing.

frequently asked questions
Who is this course for?
Yoga Ethics For Transforming Racism is for everyone interested in finding out how yoga practice and social justice are connected.
Is Yoga Ethics For Transforming Racism just for white people?
No. We are highly aware that white people and BIPOC have a different lived experience around racism and have different roles to play, this course has been put together in a way that weaves some of these issues together via yoga ethics. We don’t claim to have all the answers, but we are open to exploring the questions together in the spirit of respecting diversity.
Is Yoga Ethics For Transforming Racism a quick fix for healing racism?
Of course not! But it will give you a powerful framework to use for yourself, your friends, family and students as lifelong commitment to change. By committing to Yoga Ethics, we commit to continuously revisiting and reapplying these principles.
Where will the profits from Yoga Ethics For Transforming Racism be donated to?
50% of the net proceeds will be donated to the Black Yoga Teachers Alliance, Inc. (BYTA) scholarship fund and 50% to the I AM YOGA scholarship fund. BYTA is a non-profit organisation focused on the educational and professional development of black yoga teachers. BYTA and its members increase the accessibility of yoga in communities that have traditionally had limited or no access to the practice. You can find out more about this wonderful organization here: https://blackyogateachersalliance.org/

The I AM YOGA scholarship fund helps underserved yoga students participate in Kiesha Battles’ 200 hour yoga teacher training program. Find out more here: https://www.kieshabattles.com/
