SUPPORT trauma recovery with yoga
Using the deep wisdom of the yoga tradition - go beyond trauma informed asanas practice
We are experiencing physical, social, environmental and political challenges, that for many, around the world, have been traumatizing.

The symptoms are depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, worsening chronic health problems, and more.

Some think that the symptoms they are experiencing are simply personality traits and, therefore, cannot be changed. But they are often actually symptoms of trauma, and trauma CAN be healed.

70% of adults in the U.S. have experienced some type of traumatic event at least once in their lives.
that's 223.4 million people.
maybe you have experienced trauma - And certainly there are folks in your classes who have experienced it as well.

Although many people struggle with anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, or relationship issues, most DO NOT understand how these issues are linked to unresolved trauma.

and "trauma" is often misunderstood.
and "trauma" is often misunderstood.

Trauma is typically thought of as car accidents, war, or abuse.

But it's also things that happened to you as a child including:
  • Not having a present, caring guardian
  • Physical or emotional abuse
  • Having a mentally ill or incarcerated family member
  • Living in a house with an addict
  • Not having a present, caring guardian

  • Having a mentally ill or incarcerated family member
  • Living in a house with an addict
Childhood experiences can affect your happiness in later life. You can have a so-called “happy childhood” but still struggle with symptoms of trauma.

Depression and anxiety are typically not personality traits - they are a response to unintegrated trauma.
Many people, yoga teachers as well as students, are afraid to wade into trauma - it’s too scary, like opening Pandora’s box.

Many people don’t want to delve into their trauma because it’s too painful, so if they do decide it's time to integrate their trauma, it's crucial that they feel safe and supported.

there are many reasons

why folks don't address their trauma, such as:
  • They don't want to change or believe they can't change because they were "made this way"
  • Family & friends are happy with the status quo & don't want anyone to change or rock the boat
  • They don't know how to access effective resources
  • Feeling scared or not wanting to talk about their trauma
  • Fear of rejection, being overwhelmed, and social stigma, (labels & diagnosis)
  • Not understanding who they are & what the purpose of their life is
  • Just trying to manage the symptoms of trauma with medication

there are many ways

folks deal with trauma, like:
  • Totally ignoring it & hoping it'll go away, while continuing to deal with depression, anxiety, or addictive behaviors
  • Talk therapy - which is helpful but doesn't necessarily address the body, where trauma is stored
  • Physical exercise
  • Alcohol or other substances, or shopping, gambling, disordered eating, dysfunctional relationships or other coping strategies.

Many years ago, when I was searching for a way to process
MY OWN trauma that showed up as

depression and
eating disorders,

I found yoga.
Yoga helped me to put myself back together again - to recognize my own trauma, and, along with the support of a good psychotherapist, to heal it.
YOGA WAS MY LIFELINE!
Later I met Brett, who was also an avid yoga practitioner, and we started collaborating, developing methodology and courses to help people who struggle with trauma.
Brett is an extraordinary psychotherapist who specializes in helping people use the wisdom of the yoga tradition to integrate trauma, heal, and thrive.

In 2009, I began to train mental health professionals to use yoga in their clinical practices at the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC).
This was the first teacher training program for mental health professionals in the country offered by a major continuing education organization. Brett has co-taught many workshops with me over the years at MAHEC.
Brett and I believe that yoga philosophy and practice used as a framework for trauma recovery can provide broad, deep possibilities for healing that go way beyond trauma-informed asana practice.

Understanding trauma and the way it functions in people, provides a way to understand people's behavior, to have more compassion for others. It’s empowering to be able to support your family, friends or students in their healing process and to be a helpful, supportive (rather than reactive) person in their life.

Understanding your own trauma and how yoga can help you heal it means you can be a better friend or family member, a better citizen, and a better steward of the planet.
